The power of the Peer Support Movement is strong here in Michigan. Michigan's trained Peer workforce, the Michigan Department of Community Health and the Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards just completed a three-day conference with inspiring speakers, dynamic workshops and excited participants at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Michigan.
The conference was attended by more than 400 participants who created an open, relaxed and accepting atmosphere that was enjoyed by all and demonstrated the power of welcoming. Peers have become a major force in Michigan's systems transformation experience. From New Buffalo to Temperance and from Adrian to Marquette, the Peer workforce is engaged in many different and interesting kinds of recovery work. Peers are foot soldiers, leading the effort to help instill the belief that recovery is possible and that they will be there to make that goal a reality for all consumers. Every day the message of hope is being spread and people's dreams are coming true.
At the MRCE, spreading the message of recovery is our goal too. We were pleased to participate in this first annual event. Looking across the ballroom at the Hyatt, you couldn't help but feel proud to be part of this transformation movement, led by forward-thinking staff at the Michigan Department of Community Health. Their creative approach to designing and funding Peer services, is an example to other states looking to harness the power of Peers in changing people's lives.
