Parent Management Training-Oregon Model (PMTO)

At the Oregon Social Learning Center it was found that five specific core parenting skills affect serious behavior problems the most. Parent Management Training-Oregon Model (PMTO) is centered around behavioral intervention. PMTO helps parents learn different parenting skills that will positively impact the child's problematic behavior the most.

The 5 core parenting skills in Parent Management Training-Oregon model (PMTO).

The five Core Parenting Skills are:

1.       Limit Setting - When a child's problem behavior occurs, PMTO teaches parents to respond with negative consequences. The negative consequences are non-physical consequences.

2.       Positive Parent Involvement - PMTO teaches parents to use positive parent involvement, giving positive attention, along with genuine interest and caring.

3.       Monitoring and Supervision - Checking on a child's behavior happens both in and out of the child's and parents’ home.

4.       Encouragement - PMTO helps parents learn better skills for positive parenting. This includes incentives (if _____  then ______) or praise.

5.       Family Problem Solving – PMTO teaches families a way of getting family input when making decisions.

The Parent Management Training-Oregon Model was designed to help children who struggle with aggression or have problems with lacking confidence. The above positive techniques help children gain better control over their behavior.

In PMTO, families are seen weekly and also receive supportive phone calls. PMTO is strengths-based. It uses strengths and skills the family and child already have. The children's behavior is changed through both positive and negative reinforcement.
