Obsessive Compulsive Foundation

The International Obsessive Compulsive Foundation (OCD Foundation) is celebrating its 25 year anniversary this year. On the national OCD Foundation website are links to downloads of brochures and fact sheets of subtypes and related disorders.

The different subtypes of OCD are:
  • Contamination fears
  • Hoarding
  • "Just Right" OCD
  • Scrupulosity
  • Violent and sexual obsession
There are fact sheets on related disorders and a graph illustrating how they are the same as OCD and different from OCD. The related disorders are:
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder
  • Skin Picking Disorder
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • Trichotillomania
The fact sheets are comprehensive and both easy to read and understand. They are informative and helpful. There is also a fact sheet about brain surgery and medical device treatment options for people with severe and persistent OCD.

There is a hoarding center that is a part of the OCD Foundation website. It states that possibly 1 in 20 people struggle with hoarding, while 1 in 50 struggle with extreme hoarding. On the hoarding fact sheet, this information was given:
Are hoarding and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) related?
Compulsive hoarding was commonly considered to be a type of OCD. Some estimate that as many as 1 in 4 people with OCD also have compulsive hoarding. Recent research suggests that nearly 1 in 5 compulsive hoarders have non-hoarding OCD symptoms. Compulsive hoarding is also considered a feature of Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) and may develop along with other mental illnesses, such as Dementia and Schizophrenia.
Many people who happen to have a mental illness struggle with hoarding, but sometimges think that they don't have it because they have a different diagnosis, such as Schizophrenia. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can also co-occur with other diagnoses.

The OCD Foundation has a home in Michigan as well. It is located in Livonia. Their contact information is:

On their website they have suggested things to read, information about Camp Redwing which is a camp for children and adolescents who have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder held in Howell and a page listing support groups.  Current news events and items are on the front page of the website.

There are also back issues of the newsletter Never Say Never archived on their website. These have a section called “Health Scout” that gives information of interest to those who are trying to cope with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. In the Spring 2011 issue it is mentioned that OCD Michigan is down to 7 active support groups, and that some of those may be in danger of closing.
