WRAP groups focus on assisting individuals in developing a Wellness Recovery Action Plan. WRAP is a personal action planning tool that was developed by Mary Ellen Copeland at the Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery. WRAP is designed to enable individuals to identify and create a personal plan of action to get well and stay well. The planning process requires users to carefully consider their needs during those periods when they are well and those periods when they are struggling with mental health symptoms and related issues. Preferred strategies to avoid triggers, obtain the support of friends and family, and maintain routine responsibilities are clearly outlined in the plan. Michigan Peers who have participated in groups or used WRAP as a tool report that the process has changed their lives and helped them avoid unnecessary psychiatric hospitalizations.
The American Psychiatric Association recently published the results of an outcomes evaluation for WRAP groups conducted in Ohio.
Additional research findings and articles by Mary Ellen Copeland are available on the Copeland Center website.
