Archived Teleconference now available on the SAMHSA ADS Center Web site.

This training teleconference reviews some of the media's positive messages related to mental health, as well as reports on the media’s negative messaging, which often repeats and perpetuates inaccurate stereotypes of people with mental health problems. Education and awareness strategies are provided that individuals and organizations may use to encourage the media to promote valid, accurate, and respectful depictions of people with mental health problems.

Some comments from participants about this teleconference include:

“I enjoyed hearing from speakers with diverse backgrounds, from academic to advocacy group to individual with bipolar disorder. I liked having resource pages and very much appreciated hearing/seeing real-life examples of various media portrayals of those with mental health disorders. Powerful! Best teleconference I've been on.”

“I particularly thought that the presentation that highlighted the ’praise, protest, personal contact and partnership’ concept was excellent. I had never heard of this before, and thus thought that it was really beneficial for the work that we will do with stigma reduction.”

“It was very 'real' and solid examples were given that educated me and gave me useful information that I can implement in my life and share with others.”
