In January 2009, West Michigan Community Mental Health System and the Ludington Area Arts Council will bring you The Exhibition Alliance’s The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic. This exhibit is based on a book of the same name by Darby Penney and Peter Stastny, and tells the stories of individuals who lived in a state mental hospital in the early to mid 20th century. Accompanying the exhibit is a display of suitcases created by West Michigan Community Mental Health System consumers and staff. This display tells the stories of local individuals living with mental illnesses and developmental disabilities today.
The exhibit and display will be housed at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts at 107 S. Harrison Street in Ludington.
On Friday, January 16, guided tours and a book signing by co-author Darby Penney will be held from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm, followed by a presentation by Ms. Penney at 5:15 pm. Paperback copies of the book The Lives They Left Behind will be on sale for $10.00. More guided tours will be available after the presentation until 7:00 pm. Admission is free.
