This story was submitted by Joel Berman, Certified Peer Support Specialist

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Francesia Pernice-Duca Ph D, a professor at my alma mater, Wayne State University. Being involved in the Michigan mental health recovery movement, she invited me to present my recovery story to one of her classes. The class is a graduate course in adult psychopathology, one that she teaches from a recovery perspective. Students include counselors, art therapists, school counselors, substance abuse and marriage and family therapists. On December 3rd, 2009 I attended her class and presented my story.

The students were most receptive to me and my story. Also present were Malkia and Emily from Community Network Services of Oakland County. They presented their “Stomp Out Stigma.” The last hour of the class we all joined in for good conversation about mental health recovery. This was one of my most enjoyable presentations.
