The Michigan Department of Community Health has initiated the statewide implementation of the Recovery Enhancing Environment Measure (REE-Michigan)

What is the Recovery Enhancing Environment Measure (REE)? The REE is a survey that collects information about recovery from people using mental health services. The results show how successful a program or system is in creating an atmosphere in which recovery can flourish. The REE provides answers to important questions like:

  • Where are the people we serve on their personal journeys of recovery?
  • What factors need to be addressed in a recovery-oriented mental health system?
  • Which practices that promote recovery are already in place?  Which are not yet fully developed?
  • How well do we help people develop their potential for resilience and recovery?
The results of the REE can help organizations learn, change and become more recovery-oriented.  It is meant to be part of an organizational development process that includes all stakeholders, not just a one-time event.

The REE was developed by Priscilla Ridgway, Ph.D., a researcher who identifies herself as a mental health consumer.  She is an Associate Professor with the Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University.

Dr. Ridgway describes the development and purpose of the REE in a presentation that was recorded at the September 19, 2008 meeting of the Michigan Recovery Council.
