Suggestion:   MRCE Support

Thanks for being there (Peer Retreat).  I think the presence of MRCE really gave people that feeling of importance and being part of something big.  I look forward to seeing how the Video turned out…

Suggestion:   Peer Support Training
I want to go to peer support training so I can work at Easter Seals of SE Michigan. I was told there would be training in September. Could you please tell me where to find the information about it? Please call me.  My home computer isn't working and I don't get to the library very often.
Thank You!
David
Response by MI Recovery:   this is a frequently asked question.  The first requirement is that the applicant be employed at an agency (Doing peer work) for at least 2 months and be sponsored by the employer to the training.   A written  application is submitted by the agency's peer liaison to the MDCH staff that oversee the program and make the final selections.

If you are not yet employed as a peer, I would suggest you become a volunteer and pursue the training that the agency offers to new peer support specialist as preparation for future selection into the training.

Good Luck and keep working in your own recovery.  It's the best preparation for helping others.

Could you please email me w/ step by step instructions on how to post my recovery story , and picture Thank you very much, Chris
Response by MI Recovery:   There are no rules as to how to present your story, but our experience has lead us to create a list of questions to consider in composing your story for others.

On 6-25-2010 we answered a similar question and would refer you to that posting.  In addition I am included a list of questions for people to consider when they either write or video record their story.  We hope you will find this helpful.

Recovery Stories  &  Video tips

What does recovery mean to you?

How did recovery start for you?

What was most helpful for you as you began your journey of recovery?

Were there some special people who was important to you, and why?

How has your life changed?

What are the big and little ways,.. recovery happens in your life?

What inspires you and lifts your spirits?

If you are a peer support specialist:

What motivated you to become one?

How has being a peer helped your recovery?

Why did you “become” a peer support specialist?

Is there anything else that you think is important for people to know about Mental Health recovery and stigma?

If you were asked to join a team and given the task of building a website dedicated to recovery, what would you want to see on the site?

What recovery resources (or websites) would recommend to others?

When you are done you can attach the story to the " contact us" message page or mail a DVD to our location

Suggestion:   Certified Peer Support Specialist

I am a recovering alcoholic with 25 years of sobriety and recently heard of this certification and wish to learn more about how I may obtain such a certification - Please advise

Response by MI Recovery:   This is a "mental health" recovery program.   The Certified Peer Support training is for  consumers employed by Community Mental Health Service Providers.   It requires (1) a minimum of 2 months employment at a CMH provider agency,  (2) the sponsorship of that agency (about $400) and (3) acceptance into the training by MDCH staff.   To find out more. contact your local Mental Health provider.

I am wondering just how many of us in the State of Michigan's

recovery story information

*** Message/Suggestion ***
Are you still accepting video recovery stories? Could you please send me the rules and guidelines for recovery stories?

Thanks, please get back to me.

*** Permission to post online ***

Yes

Response by MI Recovery:

We are always looking for people's stories of recovery.

There are no real rules for recovery stories, but we suggest some guidelines for you to think about. Take the time to relax before you begin. Don't put pressure on yourself to remember everything you want to say. If you are doing a video story, try not to read from notes, but an occasional glance to remember something is fine because we will edit out that time. We will try to edit the piece to about 3 to 4 minutes, but the submission can be as long a you wish. Take the time you need to feel complete with the story. We will edit out any re-starts, pauses, or other material that distracts you from sharing. If the story is written, these suggestions will not apply and it will be as long as it is.

Expressing your emotion is O K. We know this will be a personal moment for you and nothing communicates to others like seeing someone experiencing a real, and deeply felt, emotion. This is the important stuff of a person's life and it should go to the essence of who you are, and who you have become. Hopes and dreams, too, are the stuff of life as is celebrating your achievements.

We will attempt to capture the essence of your journey, and the people and experiences that made a difference. Every journey is unique. How your recovery has made your life more meaningful to you, and any work you may have done that has enhanced and supported your continuing growth will be appreciated.

Good luck and have fun with this project. Be proud of yourself and proud of the hard work you have done to become who you are today.

The final production story (DVD) will be sent to you for your approval before we will place it on the Internet. It can also be removed at any time you request it.

Working on my dissertation and seeking any resources on history of transformation to recovery based mental health services in Michigan

Response by MI Recovery:   MRCE too is collecting documents to tell the Michigam story. In addition to our site, you should look at the Michigan Department of Community health site under Mental Health. The Department has established the Recovery Council to assist in development and implementation of recovery principles & practices state wide: http://www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,1607,7-132-2941_4868_41749---,00.html

MDCH developed the Peer Support Specialist Training program, which has trained over 850 peers to work in the service delivery system, and participate at all levels of decision making throughout the system. The council recommended and the department established the MRCE to promote Recovery and Best Practices.

JIMHO (Justice in Mental Health Organizations) has been a tireless advocate of recovery concepts since 1980.

Also, Each provider has their own story to tell about how recovery became the focus of service delivery. Good luck with these starting points, and when you are done we would love to include your work in our collection of documents.

Response by MI Recovery:

Michigan Peer Specialists United is a statewide group of certified peers who are forming a Non-Profit organization whose purpose is to promote recovery education, advocacy, anti stigma and hope. The group has a steering committee driving this development and planning future activities.

One current project is to build a data base of Certified Peers in Michigan.

If peers want to be added to this list, they can contact the group at MiPeers@comcast.net.

I was at the the Peer liaison meeting and cannot remember how to get to the place in this website where someone can put in their recovery story. I have a couple of clubhouse members who would like to share their story. Could you please tell me where this is found on the website. Thanks

*** Permission to post online ***

*** Include my name ***

Response by MI Recovery:   This is a great question. To submit a recovery story for the Reflections on Recovery section of the site, you would use the same "contact us" tab that you used to submit the question. If there was not enough space in the window, you could then contact us directly to E-mail or fax the story.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to share this answer with others.

I am more than willing to become a part of this recovery team and access some great information about recovery and share with others in the same process of change. How I can possibly get connected to an employment site and resource information for the recovery process.

Response by MI Recovery:   You can contact CMH employers inquire about position, or submit applications for possible future jobs. We do list open Peer Specialist positions form around the state when we hear about them. We see that you live in the Detroit area and there are opening now in Detroit. Becoming a volunteer in a Drop In or Clubhouse would also provide someone with first hand knowledge and experience in recovery based care. In these challenging financial times, providers are turning more and more to volunteers to meet the increasing demands for service.

Suggestion:   Our mental health agency, Bay-Arenac Behavioral Health, is in its second grant year in developing Health Integration services. We provide both group and individual serves promoting whole health and wellness. We have, or are in the process of creating such tools as a wellness website, personalized integrated health portfolios, and a relaxation CD. We want to share our information, and solicit input for helpful information for our website. Who can I talk to about this?

Response by MI Recovery:   On November 12, 2009, there is an other Health & Wellness Initiative meting at LCC West in Lansing. At that meeting MRCE will be presenting the Link to the Michigan Health and wellness forums at Yahoo.com. This group has been created for Michigan residents to seek direction in finding answers to health and wellness questions, locate resources, or request assistance from the members of the integrating Health Initiative network. I hope to see you at the meeting and will have some ideas for you then.

In the mean time I have refered your request to the MRCE Director who will contact you soon

As people learn about and join this group, the support you are looking for could come from group's members.

Copy of REE I would like to find a copy of the latest REE, the one that MIDCH is implementing as a tool to measure recovery outcomes. I would appreciate your assistance. Thank you very much,

Response by MI Recovery:

You are correct about the REE being administered but it will be used as a quality improvement tool, not to measure outcomes. It will be administered at every CMH in the state to collect information from consumers. They will be asked to assess their experience of recovery based services from their providers. This is a real opportunity for consumers to be empowered and have a direct influence on shaping the services available to them in the future. The MDCH has put it's priority on implementing “Recovery” in the system of care, into action.

This survey will contribute to defining the future of mental health services in the state of Michigan.

The version that will be used is copyrighted.  Please contact MDCH for the assistance you have requested

Lucy, It our pleasure to share any event that is forwarded for us to post.

And it was awesome and wonderful ! Met some great brother military veterans, my brothers in arms (us vets ) and other peers as well.
Learned a lot , very informative, and had a good time !

Thank you to all involved.

Response by MI Recovery:

Thank you Chris for your comments. The real credit goes to the Michigan Dept. Community

Health staff who pulled the topics together and lined up the speakers, and the Michigan Association of Community Mental health Boards who made all the arrangements and hosted the event.

This is a lot of work, and these remarkable people do it every day, month after month, without much recognition from most of us.

Response by MI Recovery:

Brandi, this is something we would also like to be able to include on the site. Unfortunately , publishing

the identity of the Certified Peers is an issue of confidentiality. As you know, to be in the training program, the candidates are consumers of Community Mental Health services, and their identity is protected from disclosure..

Suggestion:   Recovery Stories

Hi Everyone,
I am working on putting together items that will air on our in house TV monitors in our waiting area here at St Clair County Community Mental Heath. We are filming local recovery stories and educational info. I was wondering if you could share the recovery stories that you have on this website. I would really help us out as our resources for filming are limited and we would like to be able to have fresh content on a regular basis. If we need to obtain additional releases from the individuals we would be happy to do that.
Response by MI Recovery:

This is an interesting request. Although the individual stories do belong to the narrator, the permission to record and, after editing, post their video on the site, is limited to the MRCE site. We can contact story tellers and give them your request to consider. The follow up would be up to them and you to work out. Perhaps another solution would be for MRCE to come to your agency and shoot videos with your local peers, drop in members, and other volunteers. Let us know how you want us to help.

Why did I, longtime CMH "consumer" (hate that term) have to steal your flyer off a bulletin board to find you? Ya'll know who we are: you could have sent me flyer in the mail! joey

Response by MI Recovery:

Jo Ann raises an interesting issue. We do create and distribute a number of posters and flyers for the MRCE. We will of course mail any of them to individuals who write or call to request them. Perhaps, we should post them on the site so visitors can download them for them selves. Watch the daily news on the home page for updates.

Using grant money, what are some ways mental health organizations use to challenge stigma in the community?

Response by MI Recovery:

Thank you for your question.  I contacted the Department of Community Health, and learned that eight (8)  anti-stigma projects were funded for the FY 80-09.  The scope of the projects ranged form using media to educate  the community, to developing staff training, to enlisting peer support specialists in community integration activities with individual consumers to support recovery.

A summery chart of the projects will be posted on the Anti-stigma page  of this site.
